When I first wake up in the morning, I like to enjoy me some fresh made juice, to slowly introduce my body to food after it’s nightly fasting. Then an hour or two later on in the morning, the bigger meals come.. like this one! Hearty oatmeal with apples and cinnamon (yumyumyum) and I even enjoyed it warm, thanks to my dehydrator!
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal (Raw):
- 1 cup good quality water
- 3 tablespoons shelled hemp seeds
- 1 tablespoon coconut butter
- 1 tablespoon local honey/agave nectar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- A pinch o’ himalayan sea salt
- 1 cup flaked oats
- 1/2 of a medium fuji apple, chopped
Method to the Oats:
- Combine the water, hemp seeds, coconut butter, honey, cinnamon, vanilla, and himalayan sea salt well in your favorite blender to make a delicious spiced sweet hemp milk.
- Pour this milk over your oats and let it sit overnight.
- In the morning, take out the oatmeal and let it come to room temperature, or throw in your dehydrator at 115 degrees for a half an hour or more for a warm and tasty oatmeal!
- Top with fuji apples and maybe even a drizzle of agave nectar and perhaps a sprinkling of some more cinnamon?! YUM!
A note about oats: apparently most rolled oats are not truly raw, since they are made by steaming whole oats and flattening them with a roller. I didn’t do my research before I bought my thick rolled oats for this recipe, but oh well, you live and you learn. If you would like to have this recipe be truly raw, then you can purchase raw flaked rolled oats online, or perhaps even find them at your health food store.
Either way, you will benefit from the protein and goodness in oats, raw or not. Steel cut oats are also a more nutritious option than rolled oats, since they still contain the whole grain including the oat bran. For more information on where to get raw oats and the difference between the processing methods (not to mention some tasty raw recipes) check out Nouveau Raw.
P.S. I have made some changes to my experimentation with raw foods. Recently I have felt like I needed a little more substance (aka I have really missed beans, grains, and tofu) in my diet. So I have pushed my stick-to-the-rule-book stubbornness to the side, and decided that it is probably best if I listened to my body’s demands. So I have been doing a raw until dinner time approach, where if I feel like my body would like a little more substance, I happily furnish it with such said substance. If not, then I stick to something my raw rulebook would approve of.
Don’t get me wrong, I really believe that someone could be completely fulfilled by a one hundred percent raw foods diet, I just know that at this juncture in my life, I cannot. But hey, anyone will benefit from the addition of more raw foods in their diet, and I intend on maintaining my high raw diet, because frankly, I have felt pretty freaking awesome ever since I started this personal science experiment.
And that’s what personal experiments are all about, finding out what works best for you. And who knows, maybe in a few months (with more skills and knowledge!) I will be able to fully attempt a one hundred percent raw diet that lasts more than a month and a half??
We shall see.
I was wondering where you were going w/ the water and hemp seeds and coconut butter – and wham! – milk for the oatmeal! Inspired!
Yeah I use the hemp seeds, water, coconut butter, and honey as a base in my smoothies every day! No straining required for this tasty milk! ; )
Awesome recipe!
I think it’s so important to listen to your body! Good for you for doing that. I find that when you do research, a lot of long-time raw foodists eventually reintroduce a little cooked food back into their life! So no worries on that decision 😉
Thanks! Yeah at first I was disappointed with myself, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!
No one is going to fault you for being high raw 😉 You’re still eating better than 99% of people on the planet, besides, I couldn’t resist a cooked meal like the one you posted just the other day either! When I was more of a raw enthusiast I used to eat a lot of soaked oat groats for breakfast, your bowl looks yummy!
This looks great! I think it’s inspiring how you can eat so much raw foods and it’s all so creative! I’m getting more and more interested in raw foods but at the moment Ive settled with just incorporating something raw with every meal (even if its just a big bowl of salad veggies!)
I think that is an excellent start! I myself really jumped into it at first, but found that to be an unsustainable way to go about it. So now I am just focusing on getting the majority of my meals raw, but mostly listening to my body and what it needs. : )
